Can you rent a scooter in Vietnam with just a US car licence?

Hey guys! What's renting and riding scooters like in Vietnam? Had a rough time in Thailand this year with frequent police stops, breathalyser tests, searches and officers asking for bribes. They wanted an international driving permit plus a motorcycle licence.

I've got a US car licence but no motorcycle endorsement. Can I legally rent and ride a moped in Vietnam? Do I need an IDP, the little booklet, too? Trying to figure out the rules and avoid that whole hassle.

Make sure your licence actually covers the bike you're riding.

⚠️ Fines for riding without the required licence can range from 2 to 8 million VND.

❌ If you have an accident without a valid licence, you could run into insurance issues and end up covering the costs yourself.

For anything under 50cc, you don't need a licence. Some electric models, like the VinFast Evo 200 Lite, are an option too. For bikes that require a motorcycle licence, a car licence alone won't cut it.

You'll need an IDP too for bikes that require a licence. The police know what the booklet looks like and do ask for it. Without it, you can be treated as riding without a valid licence.
